Radiant Orchid: Pantone's Color Of The Year

We are just weeks away from 2014, and what better way to bring in the New Year than decorating with the trendiest color of 2014? The Pantone color of the year 2014 is Radiant Orchid and it will definitely start your year off vibrantly! The color is a mix of fuchsia, pink, and purple. The decorating possibilities are endless, but it depends on your decorating style. Whether you like to make a bold statement, or just a pop of color here and there, here are ways to design for your style:

Bold Statement

If you’re looking to bring in the New Year making and bold and vibrant statement, consider using Radiant Orchid as the focal point in any room. For the living room, try painting one wall Radiant Orchid and the rest a neutral color, such as gray or tan. Maybe add a few Radiant Orchid throw pillows or rugs as well! For your bedroom, go all out and have Radiant Orchid on the walls, the bedspread, the pillows, and the rug! When mixed with a few neutral colors, Radiant Orchid won’t be overdone.

Pop of Color

If you’re looking for more of a subtle look, bringing in Radiant Orchid will be the perfect pop of color for any room! For the living room, keep the walls neutral and add the Radiant Orchid to your pillows, blankets, lampshades, or rugs.  For your bedroom, keep the Radiant Orchid to your bedspread or rug only. Painting the walls a light or dark shade of gray will make your room trendy! For the dining room, leave the Radiant Orchid color to the chair upholstery, table centerpiece, or place mats.

Radiant Orchid is sure to make a statement, whether bold or subtle, in your home in 2014. Utilizing this color will add a trendy touch to your home as well. For accent furniture to pair with Pantone’s color of 2014, check out our website!

How To Arrange Your Furniture For A Holiday Gathering

The Holiday season is only weeks away and a lot of time will be spent with friends and family! Making everyone feel comfortable is more than just good food and good company, it can also depend on the layout of your furniture. Here are three different ways to arrange your furniture for the type of Holiday gathering you’re planning to have:

Lots of Friends and Family

If you’re having a large gathering, it would be best to arrange your furniture in an open and spacious way. Try not to have furniture or large coffee tables in the middle of the room and keep your sofas and chairs close to the wall. Also, try to make sure you have plenty of seating so everyone can feel comfortable! This layout will make everyone feel involved and welcomed!

A Mix of Adults and Children

If there will be an almost equal amount of children and adults at your gathering, it would be best to create spaces with your furniture. Place your sofas and chairs in the middle of the room and create mini living rooms. Maybe have a coffee table and a comfy area rug for the children to color or play games on. You could place this play area on a different end of the living room. This will give the adults and children more privacy without being completely separated.

A Small Gathering

If you are planning on having just a few friends and family members, it will be best to create a small and intimate space. To do this, you can place your furniture close together and across from one another. Try mixing the sizes of your furniture and have a large sofa and a few small chairs or vice versa. This layout allows for conversation and intimacy and having different sizes of furniture will still give people space if they need it.

Whether you are having a large or small gathering, you can create a comfortable impression and feeling with the layout of your furniture. Your Holiday gathering will be a success! To find the perfect furniture for your gathering and layout, visit our website or stop by one of our three locations!

Sit Back, Relax and Watch The Football Game On Your New Furniture

There are still twelve weeks left in the regular NFL season so why not enjoy those twelve weeks relaxing in comfort watching your favorite football teams? Some football fans prefer to lounge while enjoying the game, while others like to make a party out of Sunday and Monday night football. For either preference, having the right furniture can make or break the relaxation and quality of your football-watching experience.

For a recliner or a reclining sofa, there are certain qualities that make it a great piece of furniture to make watching football even better! Here are the top 3 qualities:

1. Comfort

If you enjoy lounging while watching football, a comfortable recliner would be the best option for you. You wouldn’t have to share the space with anyone else and you are able to fully relax. Aspects of a recliner that make it comfortable can vary from person-to-person, however, most of the time, padded cushions make the most comfortable recliners. Another aspect that makes a recliner comfortable is the angle of how far back it reclines. You don’t want it to recline too far that you won’t be able to see the game, but you also want it to lean far enough back that you are able to relax.

2. Size

For those who like to watch football with a group of people, a large reclining sofa is the best option. A large sofa gives enough room for multiple people to sit down comfortably. Also, in that group, there may be someone who enjoys lounging, who would benefit from the recliner in the sofa. With a large sofa, your guests will be able to comfortably watch the game and enjoy the company.

3. Material

The material of your recliner or sofa is important depending on how you spend your time watching football. If you like to lounge, the material is not as important of an aspect. If you like to watch football in large groups, the easiest material would be leather. The reason for this is because leather is an easier cleanup. Usually, football game gatherings involve a lot of food, beverages, and sometimes spills. Having leather furniture will make those spills easy to clean and the only thing you will have to worry about is cheering on your favorite team!

With these twelve weeks left in the regular season and these qualities in mind, come find the perfect recliner or reclining sofa at any of our three locations or online at http://www.hennenfurniture.com/ and cheer on your teams in comfort!

Fall 2013 and Winter 2014 Home Decorating Trends

With the changing seasons, it’s time to change your decorations! We want to help you create beautiful designs for your home so you can impress your guests for the Holiday festivities or you can relax in style and comfort when the weather cools down.  Whether you want to repaint your walls or just add seasonal accessories, here are the latest trends to make your home perfect for fall and winter!

Fall
Trending fall paint colors range from neutral to bright, perfect for any personality or style! Depending on the look you’re going for, certain colors set a different tone to each room. Here’s how:

Neutral Colors like grass-green, lettuce green, chocolate brown, rose dust, and oyster gray add elegance to any room and allow you to add a pop of color through your accessories such as throw pillows, lamp shades, or rugs! These colors are great for fall and bring a little bit of the outdoors into your home.

Bright colors such as golden yellow, coral, purple orchid, red, and teal are great colors for those who want a sophisticated and vibrant room! These colors, paired with neutral accessories set the tone for a modern home and add a little twist to the traditional fall colors.

Bringing the outdoor fall colors inside doesn’t mean you have to paint your walls.  You can stylishly decorate for fall using ideas such as:
  • Pumpkins and gourds on your selves, fireplaces, or tables
  • Cornhusk accents in the kitchen or on your tables
  • Leaves made out of paper
  • Framing the leaves from outside

Winter
Although winter hasn’t arrived yet, it’s always nice to plan ahead on your decorations!  One great trend Candle holders wrapped in the sleeve of an old sweater
  • A rug made from strips of old sweaters
  • A sweater lampshade
  • Sweater napkin rings
  • A sweater wreath

A second trend for winter is to add shimmer to your home.  Whether the shimmer is bold or subtle, it is the perfect way to add a touch of winter to your home. Add shimmer in these simple ways:
  • Throw pillows
  • Blankets
  • Lamp Shades
  • Vases
  • Candles

Updating your home with the changing seasons can be as easy as recycling an old sweater or as bold as changing the color of your walls! No matter how you want to decorate your home for fall and winter we have products that will match the tone you want to set! How To Choose The Right Color

Whether you believe it or not, choosing a paint color might be the most important (and most difficult) decision of the entire decorating process. The reason we say this is because it’s been shown that color actually accounts for 60 percent of our response to a particular object or place. Although we won’t get into a breakdown of the specific responses that each color evokes, here are some general tips to keep in mind as you make your decision!

Use your References
If you have no idea where to begin with selecting a color, the best thing to do is find a point of reference. This could be a piece of art, an area rug, or even an item of furniture. Bring out a color in one of these décor pieces by painting the room the same shade. This is the most commonly used painting tactic because it’s a simple yet excellent way to make any room look well put together.

Consider the Space
Don’t stress yourself out over choosing a color for the bedroom. Even though we would obviously like the room that’s most personal to us to look nice, spend more time worrying about rooms that get the most “living time” out of them. Choosing a living room or kitchen color is much more important in the grand scheme of things.

Stick to your Instincts
If you’re not quite ready to step out of the box and want to pick a more basic hue, a foolproof way to find a color you’ll be sure to like is to look at the already existing colors around you. For example, what shade of shirt seems to keep popping up in your closet? There’s nothing wrong with playing it safe with a color that you know you already like!

The More the Merrier
Maybe you can’t decide on one color in particular. It’s okay! Play around with a color group by creating bold or subtle variations. Use a darker shade for an accent wall and softer tones for the remainder of the room. This is a trend that’s becoming more popular because people have found that accents have a way of adding life to any space.

As we said, paint selection is a critical step when it comes to decorating, but one thing to always remind yourself is that paint isn’t permanent. Regardless of if you go bold or casual, just enjoy the process and more importantly, the outcome!

It's Time For a New Mattress

Did you know that the average person spends half of their life sleeping? We’re talking about a large chunk of time spent snoozing on a piece of furniture. To us, this isn’t just any piece of furniture; which is why at Hennen Furniture, we have a selection of over 70 different types of mattresses. We understand the importance of having a good mattress as well as the fact that every person has different wants and needs when it comes to the perfect mattress. The first step is deciding when exactly is the right time to start considering investing in a new mattress – here are some indicators to look for:

  • One of the most obvious signs that it’s time to update your mattress is if you’re waking up with stiffness, aches and pains, or are having certain limbs go numb while sleeping. These issues are annoying to endure at the time and can even alter the rest of your waking hours. Don’t let a bad mattress keep you from productivity of any kind!

  • Some people just are restless sleepers, but the majority of us will find a sleeping position that works and stick to it throughout the night. If catch yourself spending an excess amount of time tossing and turning, it is usually your body’s way of telling you it isn’t comfortable which stems from having an inadequate mattress.

  • Stop and take a look at your mattress, literally. Rip off all of the covers and sheets to check out the actual condition of your mattress. Some red flags to look for are major rips, protruding springs, and most importantly, any drooping issues. Most mattresses will start sagging in the middle over time which means it will stop giving your body the support it needs for a good night’s rest.

  • Lastly, if you’ve owned your mattress for 10 years or more, it’s highly recommended to start mattress shopping for a new one even if you think you’re satisfied with your current one. Over this long period of time, your mattress becomes an attraction area for dust mites or allergens. These might not be affecting your sleep schedule now, but they have the potential to negatively affect your physical health.

Unlike other products, sometimes it isn’t completely obvious when it’s the right time to upgrade. The tricky part is that even after a mattress has lost its ability to support, it can still feel comfortable. This is why it’s important to follow the general rules of thumb listed above when weighing the idea of a new mattress. After all, life is hard enough as it is. The best thing you can do for your body is to give it the proper down time it deserves and in return, it’ll give you the energy it takes to function efficiently and effectively each and every day!

Furniture Arrangement Tips

The process of arranging your living room is not always the easiest task. Depending on the size of your space and the furniture itself, sometimes it takes a few tries to get it right. Well, we want to save you some time (and possible back pain) by sharing some of the best furniture arrangement ideas we’ve stumbled upon.

Area Rugs
Don’t be shy about the size of your area rug. For the most part, the bigger the better. These make such a great addition in any living room because of their ability to bring warmth to a space and create a much cozier environment for everyone.

Find a Focal Point
No, we’re not talking about the 60-inch flat screen television. Try to find a natural focal point such as a fireplace or big beautiful window to have the furniture directed towards. As a bonus, this doesn’t put so much attention on conversing and allows it to happen more naturally.

Create Zones
When working with a larger room, feel free to divide up the space. A small table and chairs in one half of the room along with a loveseat and coffee table on the other allows for two different activities to take place in one location.

Find a Balance
An easy way to make a room look well put together is by symmetrically balancing the furniture. This is just a fancy way of saying that if you were to divide the room in half, each side would match up perfectly.

Make it Personal
Arranging the furniture face to face makes it easy for all guests to participate in conversation no matter where they happen to be sitting.

Think Big
Another piece you really can’t go wrong with buying oversized is a coffee table. Be sure to find the right shape to compliment the space you are arranging but use it as a connection for all of the surrounding furniture.

No matter which way you choose to design your space, what’s important is that the end result is a welcoming area you can share with family and friends. Life’s greatest joys come from these special moments with loved ones. Our team at Hennen Furniture is always ready to help you with your furniture needs.

Exploring Flooring Options

Thinking of renovating or updating your living space? Flooring is often one of the first issues to tackle. The amount of flooring options currently in the marketplace is overwhelming. A simple breakdown of the five broad categories we carry at Hennen Furniture can help you to better understand and decide what best suites your interior.

1)    Wood- Nothing adds value, aesthetically and economically, to a space like a beautiful wood floor. Based off their sustainability and low maintenance alone, it will be well worth the investment.

2)    Vinyl- Its ability to resemble other types of flooring is one of the main reasons to choose vinyl. Sometimes, a genuine wood is out a homeowner’s budget, so a stylish vinyl with a similar wood floor finish is a great alternative.

3)    Laminate- High traffic areas such as entrances or hallways are prime locations for a laminate floor. Not only can it withstand the wear and tear but it’s also easy to clean due to its stain resistance quality. Plus, we all know high traffic also means all sorts of “accidents” will be inevitable.

4)    Tile- It’s easy to install and maintain. What’s not to love? Tile can also be used in nearly every room of your home, which is what makes it most popular among the variety of flooring types.

5)    Carpet & Area Rugs- This is a great option for any living space. The right carpet or area rug can dramatically soften the aesthetics of a room – perfect for the nights when you just feel like staying in.

When it comes to flooring, it’s all about what will suit your personal lifestyle and of course, the room itself. Don’t stress out if you’re still unsure. Hennen Furniture’s friendly staff is knowledgeable and ready to answer any and all questions.

Buying Outdoor Furniture

Think About Size

It’s important to think about the size of your outdoor furniture. Is your outdoor furniture going to be used for your own leisure or hosting parties? (Maybe it will be used for both.) Consider table size and how many chairs will fit in your outdoor space comfortably. You don’t want people to feel like they are sitting right on top of each other nor do you want your outdoor furniture too feel huge as if you are on the set of Alice in Wonderland. The shape, size and padding of outdoor chairs is important. Think about the narrowness and how low the chair is compared to who is going to be using it. For example low furniture is difficult for older people to get out of. No one enjoys sitting in an uncomfortable chair. Make sure your chair has enough padding that will last for years.

Think About Quality

Outdoor furniture goes through a lot of harsh weather. Such as sitting out in the sun, wind and rain. This is why it’s important to purchase high quality outdoor furniture that is built to last. When thinking about quality, the type of material your outdoor furniture is made of is key. Quality doesn’t mean expensive. Aluminum, plastic and PVC are all relatively affordable. These materials are rustproof and lightweight. The benefit of purchasing aluminum, plastic and PVC is that they require very little weather treating. Natural wood is a nice strong and sturdy material. This sturdy material tends to be the most comfortable and attractive when it comes to outdoor furniture. Natural wood does require routine weather treatments such as UV protections. Teak, Redwood, Cypress and Cedar are typically the best natural woods for outdoor furniture. Wicker is not only stylish but it is a great material for outdoor furniture. Wicker is durable for the outdoors. Every couple of years wicker furniture should be waterproofed.

Think About Shade

Your outdoor furniture can be of great quality and comfort but if you are left in the scorching sun it can make sitting outside dreadful. Enjoy summer while it's here. An umbrella connected to outdoor tables or a small canopy above your setting are great solutions. Many outdoor furniture items have shade options like a umbrella or small canopy.
