An Inside Out Look at Patio Furniture

Last month we talked about the importance of style when choosing outdoor patio furniture, Casual Outdoor Dining or Relaxing Retreat. Now, let’s take a closer look at the individual materials used to make quality outdoor furniture. Knowing the pros and cons of specific manufacturing materials can help you choose the best patio furniture for your home.

Fabrics
Part of the fun in choosing new patio furniture is browsing new color palettes and fresh summer designs. Understanding a few common fabric industry terms can make a difference in the long-term appearance of your outdoor cushions and throw pillows.
  • 100% acrylic fabrics are water resistant, making them ideal for outdoor use. Each strand is individually dyed before woven into a bolt of cloth. This process allows the colors to stay truer for longer periods of time – even in direct sunlight. However, this process also means that you may not see as many bright and intricate patterns with these types of fabrics.
  • Spun polyester fabrics often use a screen-printing process. The colors and patterns are printed directly onto the fabric after it has already been woven into large bolts. This process offers you brighter colors and more designs, but spun polyester tends to fade faster in the sun than acrylic fabric. Spun polyester fabrics are still an excellent option if you plan to use your patio furniture in shadier areas such as on a covered porch.

Cushions and pillows made from acrylic or spun polyester fabrics should be properly stored during the winter months to ensure longer wear. Since they are both synthetic fabrics, they should also never be dry-cleaned or tumbled dry – even on a low setting. Always remember to follow manufacturers cleaning instructions for your outdoor fabrics.

Foam
You may not see it or even pay much attention to it, but the quality of the foam that fills your outdoor cushions and pillows is the next item you should consider when choosing your patio furniture.

  • Regular foam is the same type found in your indoor furniture. It can be used for your outdoor furniture as well, but only if you take certain precautions when it comes to water. Regular foam, even when paired with waterproofed fabric, can and will get wet if left outside. Over time, water trapped inside the foam can mold your fabrics. Regular foam is best used for outdoor furniture that will be well protected from unexpected summer showers.
  • Foam made for outdoor use is specifically designed to dry quickly and resist mold. Special air holes inside the foam allow water to run out and not pool inside the cushion. This type of foam can be more expensive, but may be a better option if you plan to leave your outside cushions unattended.

Chairs, Tables and Lounges
Quality outdoor furniture can be made out of most any type of natural or manmade material. Plastic, wood, wicker and metal are the most common. For many homeowners, budget and personal style play more of a role when making final buying decisions.

  • Plastic is an excellent choice if you are shopping on a budget. Plastic is highly portable and a snap to clean. The only downside is plastic may not maintain its appearance, or last as long as other more expensive options.
  • Wood gives outdoor furniture a classic, warm feeling. Teak, pine, cedar, eucalyptus, or redwood are all excellent choices when shopping for quality outdoor furniture. Hardwoods such as teak tend to last longer than other types of wood furniture. Treating your wood outdoor furniture with oils or sealants can help increase its lifespan, so you can enjoy your furniture for years to come.
  • Wicker is always a beautiful option when choosing outdoor furniture and can be made from natural or synthetic materials. When choosing natural wicker, look for cane, rattan, or bamboo. Wicker gives your outdoor entertaining a cozy or rustic look.
  • Metal furniture is often made from wrought iron or aluminum. Wrought iron is best for formal or classic settings, and is a great choice if durability is important. Like wrought iron, aluminum is also very durable. Aluminum furniture is more expensive than wrought iron, but requires less maintenance and will not rust.

Casual Outdoor Dining or Relaxing Retreat?

With so many styles and brands to choose from, buying outdoor patio furniture can be a difficult decision for many homeowners. There are several things to consider even after you take into account the amount of available space on your patio or deck.

To help you choose and to whittle down your choices, you should first decide how you plan to use your outdoor living space. Do you see your outdoor space as a quiet retreat to relax and unwind, or do you envision an outdoor gathering area to entertain family and friends? Or perhaps a combination of the two?

A quiet getaway
To create a quiet retreat, choose couches and chairs with soft cushions that are easy to get comfortable and stay comfortable in. Since these cushions will primarily stay outside, be sure to choose durable fabrics that are easy to clean and can stand up to the elements. Outdoor cushions should hold their colors without fading in the sun and dry quickly when they get wet.

Soft outdoor armchairs, sofas and love seats, rockers, footstools, and chaise lounges are all good options to create a relaxing atmosphere. Decorative throw pillows in coordinating colors and homey accents will help to pull the look together.

Entertaining al fresco
For entertaining and casual outdoor dining, look for tables with ample space to lay plates, glasses and serving dishes. Dining chairs should be straight-backed or at least offer firm support so guests will be comfortable eating and drinking while seated. Low coffee table seating is better for serving drinks and casual snacks compared to full-course dining.

Traditional dining tables or tall, café-style tables and stools are both good choices and can be found in styles ranging from contemporary casual to chic and sophisticated. To help serve or stow glassware when not in use, choose an outdoor drink cart or serving tables with built in cabinets.

Many homeowners will choose to create an outdoor living space that is a combination of a quiet retreat and casual dining area. If space allows, create distinct areas for outdoor dining as well as more casual seating where your guests can relax and unwind.

Shade is important regardless of how you intend to use your space. Consider adding an umbrella if shade from backyard trees is insufficient. There are many different types of umbrellas to choose from that will fit any outdoor space and decor. For example, a cantilever style umbrella is a stand-alone umbrella that can swing into place whenever you need shade.

To keep your outdoor furniture looking its best, keep it covered when not in use or store inside away from the elements. When cleaning, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions as some outdoor furniture will require special care.

Celebrating 47 Years with Your Family and Ours

Forty-seven years ago, Bob Hennen opened a small furniture store near Crossroads Shopping Mall. He admits that at the time he didn’t know much about running a business, but he did know a lot about hard work, honesty, family, fairness, and keeping his word. Much has changed through the years, but we still believe in the values that made Bob’s little furniture store a success.
Today, Hennen’s Furniture has grown from that one small store into a thriving, second generation family business. We now have three stores located in St. Cloud, Willmar, and Alexandria with more than 170 employees. We are proud to offer the largest selection of furniture in Central Minnesota with the best prices on all your favorite brand name furniture, including Flexsteel, Lane, Sealy, and Tempur-Pedic.
At Hennen’s Furniture, we always want to make sure we carry on Bob’s tradition of great customer service. For example, no one likes to be hounded by a sales rep while shopping, so at Hennen’s you will only find non-commission sales reps. Look. Shop. Have fun! And when you have questions, one of our sales reps will be happy to help you. Our goal is to make furnishing your home easy and affordable. To help better serve our customers, we also offer complementary in-home design consulting.
To thank all of our customers who have made the last 47 years possible, we are offering special anniversary sale prices. Now through Easter you’ll find huge savings throughout every department – up to 60% off – including*:

6 Things You Didn’t Know About Leather Furniture

The classic look and feel of leather will never go out of style and is a great choice for any home. But many homeowners shy away from purchasing leather furniture for reasons that are simply not true.

It’s time to break through the myths and give leather furniture a good long look. Here are six things we bet you didn’t know about leather furniture.

1. Leather furniture is a great choice for families with young children or pets.

Quality leather furniture is far from delicate and will wear better and last longer than fabric covered furniture, making it an excellent choice for all types of families. Genuine leather wears like iron, growing richer and more supple over time. Look for genuine leather if you know your furniture will see a lot of hard use.

Real leather wears so well that in many cases the leather will outlast the padding underneath. To extend the life of your leather furniture, choose pieces with removable cushion covers whenever possible, so the padding can be replaced when needed.

2. Genuine leather furniture is a smart investment.

While genuine leather furniture will cost more initially, it will last 3 to 4 times longer than fabric covered furniture. And since the look of leather never goes out of style, the leather couch or chair you buy today could easily be passed down to the next generation.

3. The price of leather furniture is based on the method used to dye the leather.

The quality and ultimately the price of leather furniture is based on the method used to dye the leather. Pigmented leather is the most economical option. The dye is applied directly to the surface of the leather along with a protective coating. While the end result looks great and is budget friendly, the leather will not have the buttery soft feeling that most people expect from quality leather furniture.

High quality leather furniture uses a process called dyed in the drum. In this process, the color permeates the entire piece of leather for a lasting finish. Sometimes an aniline coating is added as a protective sealant to prevent staining, but this can make the leather stiff. Leather left untreated is the best choice if you want your furniture to have a buttery soft texture.

4. Caring for leather furniture is easier than you think.

It is true that leather furniture requires slightly different care than fabric furniture, but it is not as difficult as you might think – no more complicated than following the care instructions for cleaning your flat screen television.

To keep your leather furniture looking its best, wipe it down regularly with a soft dry cloth to remove dust. You can use a regular vacuum to remove dust and debris from crevices just as you would any other piece of furniture. You should also apply a leather conditioner once every 6 – 12 months. This will keep the leather soft and supple and will prevent it from drying and developing cracks.

If you have a spill, clean it up with a dry cloth. You may use water for sticky spills, but use it sparingly. You should never use household cleaning products on leather furniture.

5. Leather is comfortable and cozy year round.

Leather is not cold in the winter, or hot and sticky in the summer. Genuine leather is a natural material, which means it breathes. Worried leather will not be cozy enough in the winter? Leather can actually absorb your body heat in 12 seconds, so you will be warm and cozy no matter what the temperature is outside.

6. Leather can heal itself.

Sometimes leather can develop minor surface scratches, but unlike wood these scratches can be buffed out using a microfiber cloth and a leather conditioner. Leather is a natural material, so with a little extra care these scratches will heal over time.

Hennen Furniture offers all your favorite and high-end leather furniture brands. Is it Time For a New Mattress?

If you are experiencing a loss of sleep, waking up with aches or pain, or wake up still tired, it may be time to shop for a new mattress. Consumer Reports recommends a new mattress if your current one is five to seven years old, or if you are over 40.

If it is time for a new mattress, research has shown that people sleep better, suffer less back pain and experience fewer symptoms of stress when sleeping on newer beds. In general, your sleep quality improves if your sleep surface relieves pressure on joints and other areas of the body.

Choosing the Right Mattress For You

The construction of a mattress determines the way it feels. Most stores have a cutaway display of at least some mattresses so that you can better see the various types of construction within the mattress itself. This allows you to discover the difference between traditional inner spring coils, which include cushioning, gel or memory foam.

The best way to find the right mattress for you is to spend time trying out each type. Don’t be embarrassed, our sales team wants each of our customers to try out a variety of mattresses so you can see and feel the difference to determine what best suits you. Between plush, euro top, firm and ultra firm, finding the best fit for you is important. Spend at least five minutes on each side and on your back (your stomach, too, if that's a preferred sleeping position). Twist and flip around. Make sure you won’t disturb your partner sleeping on the other side. Shoppers who spend time testing out the variety of mattresses rarely feel they chose the wrong bed.

At Hennen Furniture, we do have a return policy for the variety of brands we carry. Discuss the options with a sales representative if you’d like extra assurance in your choice of mattress.

Various Types of Mattresses

Innerspring
These are traditional steel coils in various configurations and are often the least expensive. Variations include special layers of cushioning around each spring, some even infused with gel. Traditional innersprings with no additional layers of cushioning or individual pocket systems tend to wear out more quickly and can cause additional pressure points when no top padding is included in the make.

Memory foam
Memory foam, which was developed to protect astronauts against g-forces, is basically polyurethane with additional ingredients. It has been a favorite for those who suffer from pain. A variation is latex foam, claimed to be hypoallergenic. Traditional memory foam softens when you lie on it and soon molds to your body. Once you get up, it springs back to its original shape. Make sure to talk with your sale representative about the pros and cons between the styles of each type of memory foam mattresses.

Firm Mattress
The use of carefully selected foams, in conjunction with tighter sewing patterns in the quilt helps to create this firm feel. Firm mattresses typically have a lower height than their plush, pillow top counterparts. A firm mattress offers optimal support, but they are designed to offer limited give. They do include a layer of cushioning, but are not as soft as other models like euro plush top.

Plush
Plush beds are the middle ground within the spectrum of comfort options available in mattresses today. They typically contain one to four additional inches of foam over firm mattresses and can include a quilted sewn in top layer that can be made from a variety of materials including foam or fiber.

Eurotop mattresses are the newest style in bedding. Their unique design allows manufacturers to increase the amount of padding placed on top of the mattress with a smoother top and squared edges, even compared to pillow top mattresses, thereby reducing pressure points and improving longevity.

The Widest Selection

Hennen Furniture has a large selection of mattresses to choose from. Our mattress stock includes King Size, Queen Size, Full Size, Twin Size, Bunk Bed, Box Springs, and more. We have many mattress styles as well: pillow top, memory foam, firm, innerspring, adjustable beds, Euro Plush Tops and more. If you are looking for a mattress for your master bedroom, a mattress for your kids room, or a mattress for your guest room, Hennen is sure to have one in stock for you.

Is it time to take a closer look at your mattress? If you can see any sagging or lumps, or an increase in sleepless nights, you know it’s time to visit Hennen Furniture to shop for your new mattress.
